May Bank Monday saw the return of the immensely popular Tonbridge Triathlon. 

The event is organised by Tonbridge Lions Club involves swimming in the award winning indoor pool at Tonbridge School, a cycle discipline that covers the beautiful Kent countryside and a run within the excellent Tonbridge School sports ground, culminating on the renowned school running track. 

Despite the atrocious weather athletes came from all over the south east of England  to compete over two distances, the Standard (800 metre swim, 50km cycle, and 10k run) and the Sprint (400 metre swim, 25km cycle and 5K run). There was also a sprint relay team event comprising of three athletes competing in one of the disciplines, an Aquathon (400 metre swim, 5km run and an Aqua bike (400metre swim, 25km cycle). 

The Standard distance male winner Graham Lane from South London Harriers completed the course in 2hr: 40min: 31secs. The Standard distance female winner Saskia Ricks from Ful-On Tri finished in 2 hr: 44min: 06secs. The winning male in the Sprint distance, Jonathan Boreham from 7 Oaks Tri Club took 1hr: 23min: 32secs. The winning Sprint female, Francesa Gardner completed the course in 1hr: 29min: 07secs. All competing athletes were presented with medals at the finish from Tonbridge Lions President Gordon Hill with his wife Mrs Peggy Hill.  

Trevor Dalladay, Race Director and Chairman of the Triathlon Committee said “Tonbridge Lions Club would like to thank all the competitors, their friends and family who braved the weather and supported them which gave the event such a friendly atmosphere. The Club would also like to give a big thank you to Tonbridge School for the use of their facilities and all the volunteers including Lions Ladies, Friends of Lions, Tonbridge Rotary Club, Police Cadets and Tonbridge Air Cadets for their helpfulness and enthusiasm despite the weather. 

Any money raised from the event will go to “local charities and good causes”.
