The main highlight of the day, amongst many others was the fact that for the second year running a team from Atlantis Swimming Club beat their event record of swimming 212 lengths of the main pool in the 55 minutes allocated for each session of the event. The team on average swam a length of the pool every 16 seconds. Very well done to all concerned

The Swimarathon is Horsham Lions Club biggest annual event and this year we are celebrating our 13th event at The Pavilions in the Park Leisure Centre on Sunday 24 March 2024. Over the last twelveth years the Swimarathon has raised over £82,000 which has been donated to a number of local schools, organisations and charities.

30 Teams who took part in this event swam a total of 3561 lengths in the 25 metre pool. This is equal to 2282.69 metric metres or 55.3 metric miles.

The Horsham Lions 2024 Swimarathon is supporting for the second year, The Horsham and Crawley Branch of The Samaritans who have just celebrated their 51st Anniversary of its opening.

The Samaritans charity makes a big impact locally.

“Every life lost to Suicide is a tragedy”

Branch Director Jacqui Clark

The Samaritans vision is that fewer people die by suicide. Horsham and Crawley Branch alone have 92 active listening volunteers who have shifts lasting between 2 and 5 hours. We have:

  • Taken 16472 calls from people from people who are experiencing a whole host of different issues, ranging from being lonely, being anxious, isolated, bereaved or suicidal.

  • Spent 5397 hours on these calls.

  • Responded to 4724 e-mails from people needing their help and support

  • Responding to 116 contacts on the Samaritans brand new online chat facility, mainly from young people.

  • Donations from Horsham Lions will mean:

  • £400 enables us to buy brand new T Shirts, fleeces and jackets for our new volunteers to wear when at outreach events.

  • £500 enables the Samaritans to train12 new volunteers.

  • £600 buys individual headsets for new volunteers.

  • £800 will enable us to refurbish our face to face listening room prior to welcoming back members of the public.”

The amount donated to the Samaritans by the Lions will include tax recovered under Gift Aid.  On behalf of Horsham Lions Club a delighted Lion President Miles Loveday gives thanks to all participating teams, old and new, to their supporters and sponsors for pledging an impressive amount of money for a local charity.
