International

The Lions International Eye Centre (LIEC) is located at Korle Bu in Accra, Ghana,

is one of the largest teaching hospitals in West Africa.

LIEC provides vital help to those in West Africa suffering with the potentially blinding eye conditions so prevalent in West Africa.

We rely on your support so that we can continue to improve sight services in the region.

To deliver this project we are working in partnership with a significant number of leading organisations and agencies in the field of ophthalmology both in UK and in West Africa, and in particular with the West African College of Surgeons.

We have built, equipped and commissioned a brand new, state-of-the-art medical and surgical unit. Already, up to 300 patients are being seen each day at the unit, which is fast becoming a centre of excellence in the provision of eye care services and ophthalmological surgical training.

We have also developed and launched a series of modular courses giving higher surgical training in a wide variety of ophthalmic surgical subspecialities. And included in all our courses is a “train the trainer” element, so that our trainees can pass on their new-found skills to others when they return to their home area.

Our current aim is to increase the number of courses provided to six per year, so that we can have a real impact on the continuing sight problems encountered across the whole of West Africa.

But we cannot do it without your help. Your donations will sponsor trainee ophthalmologists or provide replacements and upgrades to ophthalmic equipment as necessary.

Your support will enable us to bring desperately needed improvements in sight services to people in need across the whole of the West Africa region.
